One of the most tragic moments in all of Bleach is when Momo Hinamori, then-Lieutenant under 5th division Captain Aizen Sousuke, was misled into thinking that her own captain was alright when in actuality ~ he was about to embark on his journey and reveal to the Soul Society that he is the bad guy that no one should f*ck with. Not only did this come to a surprise to Captain Hitsugaya, but Momo's embracing of Aizen Sousuke was used as a means to kill her. Momo Hinamori genuinely believes Aizen Sousuke was a Saint-like figure, but underneath those glasses likes a deceitful smile that only serves to plague the Soul Society. Madness is the word I'd use to describe Aizen's transformation. He impaled his own Lieutenant not out of hating her, but out of "kindness." Aizen saw no hesitation in doing so, but to Hinamori ~ her entire world shattered the moment she embraced Aizen. Even after Aizen's ascension into power, Hinamori was still convinced that that Aizen she knew would never stoop so low as to act like a criminal. It wouldn't be until later when Hinamori (for the most part) now served under Shinji Hirako, the beginning steps into a new role with a new captain.
