Ichimaru Gin, the former lieutenant and 3rd division Captain of the Gotei 13. There seems to be a huge fan base surrounding Gin's character and why shouldn't there be - He's popular amongst the ladies for his look, his deception, & overall his playful nature. To me, Gin is a character that has had the best poker face from start to finish. Even in his dying moments, the poker face was still there. Gin's eyes especially have caught my attention since in its earlier episodes, Gin's eyes were hinted to be red while later on, it appears to be teal. Now I am unsure if the author or the animation behind Bleach wanted to intentionally change his eye colors, but only Tite Kubo knows the true color of Gin's eyes. I believe, in my opinion, red was just an experiment, but his real eyes are teal because the author could've been in deep thought on what Gin's eyes colored should be. So besides his eyes, Gin is playful in which he doesn't seem bothered much. Even with the Gotei 13, he's like a "snake," Rukia explains because he teases a lot, getting under your skin is one of Gin's many talents (his creepyness to be exact). His Zanpaktou abilities are top-notch, but what drew me in with Gin's character is his backstory. So tragic in my opinion, but you had to think what Gin had to go through in order to put on that poker face. He & Rangiku were close, but upon Rangiku's mistreatment by Shinigami, Gin swore to kill the very man behind this abuse - Aizen Sousuke. So for a long time, Gin allied with Aizen to earn his trust - a killer in everyone eyes, but he only sees Aizen as the true killer. Gin's motives had to be towards Aizen or else his act wouldn't have been believable. Not even Kaname was trustworthy enough for Aizen - it was always Gin. Going back to his poker face, Gin, for so long, has been wanting to kill and take down the nefarious Aizen, but alas, even in his dying moments, he couldn't accomplish his vengeance as well as his promise with Rangiku - his friend & possibly only family (not bloodrated, but you get the idea). Gin, even in taking sides, followed his own agenda and it didn't even occur to Aizen that Gin's betrayal would brew a storm - Aizen simply discarded him much like he does with everyone. So Gin upon seeing Ichigo's newfound powers + look - entrusted him to take down Aizen, believing that Ichigo has what it takes just from looking at his eyes.
Even though he's perceived as creepy, Gin was no creepier than the other Shinigami he's encountered or met. Sometimes people do things even if it means going against others - but their agenda is beyond what you'd call evil. Gin, much to everyone's knowledge, has been a good guy (in his own creepy way, but nonetheless a force for good trying to defeat the greater evil by becoming the evil's right-hand). So I hope you enjoyed this week's Throwback. Until then, you all stay classy now!
