In order to be a Captain-class Shinigami - you must be proficient in Shikai & Bankai, having a recommendation from at least 3 captains + Head Captain, or to defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 spectators. However, as shown in Bleach, there are other Shinigami who aren't captains that possess the ability to perform Bankai. Such cases are Ichigo, Rukia, Renji, and Hisagi. However, one Shinigami stands out since he at at a Captain-class level, but prefers to be a 3rd Seat in the 11th division. His name is Ikkaku Madarame and he's a badasss. In his previous fights, it was never hinted that he could perform Bankai. However, that all changed when he faced Arrancar #13 - Edrad Liones. With nothing to lose, Ikkaku performs his Bankai and finishes off the Arrancar, cutting through his skin and inflicting much more damage. Not wanting anyone else to know, Ikkaku's friend and 5th Seat of 11th Division, Yumichika, is the only one that knows (Well in the 2nd movie, Ikkaku performs Bankai in front of Captain Hitsugaya & Lieutenant Matsumoto as well showoff his Bankai in a filler arc against Reigai-Kenpachi). Ikkaku is the epitome of a Captain-class Shinigami, but his dedication to Kenpachi Zaraki is without question as he'd rather die at his command than to become a Captain.
